'I am afraid of gossip', Navya

SHE proved her mettle in Mollywood before stepping onto films in other languages. And Navyaa Nair is repeating the success story with ‘Gaja’ in Kannada and ‘Silanerangalil’ in Tamil.

“My film ‘Gaja’ completed 100 days and I am now waiting for the release of the Malayalam film ‘Kavyam’ and a new Tamil film.

‘Kavyam’ is a heroine-oriented film in which I play Umadevi, a Brahmin woman who is the a mother of a six-year-old,” she says.

Suresh Gopi is the hero of the film that will be released soon. “I was able to use my creativity to a good extent and I hope the film will be a new experience for the audience,” says Navya.

Navya’s hands are full with Kannada, Tamil and Malayalam films. “I play the role of a college student with a dual personality in my new Kannada film. In the Tamil film ‘Aval per Tamizharassy,’ I play the protagonist Tamizharassy.” Though the actress has been getting offers from Tollywood and Kollywood, Navya is not ready to leave the Malayalam film industry. “I don’t decide on a film on the basis of language or payment. I am dedicated to my profession and am ready to act in any language if I get good roles. The characters that I portrayed in ‘Azhagiya theeye,’ ‘Chidambarathil oru Appasamy’ (for which she bagged Kalaimamani award of Tamil Nadu government), ‘Adum kothu’ and ‘Mayakannadi’ are my favourites in Tamil,” she says.

Though Navyaa came to tinseltown in 2001, she is yet to muster the courage to face allegation and gossip. “Recently, some newspapers reported that I deliberately hurt Gopika during the shooting of ‘Alibhai.’ But that is far from the truth. I unknowingly stepped on her foot during that shot and I was ready to apologise to her but before I could do that, these reports were out,” she rues.

Navya has been getting good response from other languages as well. “I hold ‘Nandanam,’ ‘Pattanthil Sundaran,’ ‘Chathikatha Chandu,’ ‘Kanne madanguka,’ ‘Jalotsavam’ and ‘Saira’ close to my heart,” she says about her favourite Malayalam movies in which she played a major role. “True; after a certain period, heroines lose their importance in the industry.Which is why after marriage, I would prefer to quit the industry.”

Navya is now busy preparing for her MBA exam. “I did not get many good characters in Mollywood last year. My roles in ‘Alibhai’ and ‘Kichamani MBA’ weren’t much noticed. So I’ve decided not to say ‘yes’ to similar roles,” she says.

Awards are not new to her. “I was selected for the Russian International Award for my character in the film ‘Saira.’ But I couldn’t receive it as I was in the US during the award ceremony. I regret it even today,” says the actress who dreams of bagging the national award some day.
